Tricks, Treats & Screenshots: The October Digital Housecleaning Guide
As October rolls around, we usually think about pumpkin spice, spooky movies, and sweater weather. But October is also Cybersecurity Awareness Month—the perfect time to talk about something that often gets overlooked: digital clutter.
Most of us have thousands of digital files scattered across phones, old hard drives, and forgotten cloud accounts. What many people don't realize is that unorganized digital clutter isn't just stressful—it’s a genuine security risk to your personal privacy and your irreplaceable family history.
Here is how you can perform a quick "digital housecleaning" this October to keep your memories safe and your personal data secure.
1. Close Down Your "Ghost" Accounts
Over the years, you’ve probably created accounts on photo-sharing sites, social networks, or cloud storage apps that you haven't logged into in years.
The Security Risk: If one of those older platforms suffers a data breach, hackers could gain access to old photos, personal details, or weak passwords that match your current logins.
The Fix: Take 15 minutes to list old accounts you no longer use (think old Flickr, PhotoBucket, or former social media accounts). Export any photos you want to keep to a safe primary location, then permanently delete the accounts.
2. Tidy Up the "Haunted" Camera Roll
The average smartphone holds thousands of photos—and a surprising percentage of them are temporary clutter: grocery list photos, random recipe screenshots, or receipts containing partial payment details.
The Security Risk: Screenshots of sensitive documents, event confirmation tickets, or addresses sitting in your camera roll can be exposed if your phone is lost, stolen, or improperly synced to an unsecured cloud.
The Fix: Search your phone’s photo app using keywords like "Screenshot," "Receipt," or "Document." Do a quick purge of anything containing sensitive personal details or temporary clutter you no longer need.
3. Guard Your Printed Memories Against Fall Weather
Digital security matters, but physical preservation does too! As temperatures drop and humidity shifts in October, storing old family photos, VHS tapes, or negatives in unheated spaces like attics, basements, or garages puts them at severe risk of mold, sticking, and rot.
The Fix: Bring boxes of physical media into temperature-controlled living areas (like a spare bedroom or closet). Keep them elevated off the floor in archival-safe containers until you’re ready to have them digitized.
